If your child has just entered Class 9, you may have noticed something surprising: every single NCERT textbook has changed. From the 2026-27 academic session, NCERT has replaced the old Class 9 books with completely new ones — new names, new chapters, and a new style of teaching. Books like Beehive, Moments and the old Mathematics textbook are gone.
As a teacher working with these new books every day in my live Class 9 batches, let me explain exactly what has changed, book by book, and what it means for your child's preparation.
Why Did NCERT Change the Class 9 Books?
The new books are part of the rollout of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023. The goal is to move away from rote memorisation toward competency-based learning — understanding concepts, applying them to real life, and thinking critically.
You will notice this immediately in the new books: chapters open with real-life situations, activities and "think about it" questions appear throughout, and even the chapter names are more story-like. Mathematics and Social Science have been released as Part 1, with Part 2 arriving later in the session.

📐 Mathematics — Ganita Manjari (Part 1)
Ganita means mathematics and Manjari means a bouquet of flowers — NCERT presents each topic as a distinct "petal". Part 1 has 8 chapters:
- Orienting Yourself: The Use of Coordinates
- Introduction to Linear Polynomials
- The World of Numbers
- Exploring Algebraic Identities
- I'm Up and Down, and Round and Round (Circles)
- Measuring Space: Perimeter and Area
- The Mathematics of Maybe: Introduction to Probability
- Predicting What Comes Next: Exploring Sequences and Progressions
The big shifts: coordinate geometry now comes first, and topics like probability and sequences & progressions have entered Class 9. The book uses a "Low Threshold, High Ceiling" approach — every student can start easily, and stronger students can go deeper with starred (*) enrichment problems.
🔬 Science — Exploration
The new Science book, Exploration, integrates Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Earth Science into one activity-based volume with 13 chapters:

- Exploring Mixtures and their Separation
- How Forces Affect Motion
- Work, Energy, and Simple Machines

Every chapter is packed with hands-on activities, "Think It Over" questions, and "Pause and Ponder" self-checks after each section — the exam questions will increasingly test this application style.
🌍 Social Science — Understanding Society: India and Beyond (Part 1)
The biggest structural change: instead of four separate SST books, Class 9 now has one integrated book with all four disciplines inside. Part 1 has 9 chapters:
- Introduction: 1. Understanding Social Science
- Geography: 2. Shaping of the Earth's Surface · 3. Atmosphere and Climate
- History: 4. Early Humans and Beginning of Civilisation · 5. State and Society up to 1000 CE
- Political Science: 6. Democracy · 7. Elections
- Economics: 8. Building Blocks in Economics: The Problem of Choice · 9. The Price Puzzle: What Drives the Market
📖 English — Kaveri & Hindi — Ganga
Kaveri replaces both Beehive and Moments with a single book of 8 prose chapters and 8 poems. The writing section is heavier now — persuasive essays, literary analysis, research writing and creative writing — while grammar remains familiar. For Hindi, the new book is Ganga, replacing the old Kshitij/Sparsh set.
How Should Students Prepare with the New Books?
- Read the new NCERT line by line. With no old question banks matching, the textbook itself is now the single most important source — including the activities and "Think It Over" boxes.
- Make fresh chapter notes. Do not reuse a senior's notes; the content has genuinely changed. Our free study material page already lists every new chapter.
